Methodology Version 2

The underlying methodology

I think we can now compress an enormous amount of our work into seven principles.

  1. Begin with the presenting phenomenon, not an inherited theory.
Start with what troubles us, surprises us, contradicts expectation, or demands explanation. The project itself eventually abandoned the attempt to begin at some imagined historical or philosophical foundation and returned to the world pressing upon us now. SD_Evolution_of_Human_Understan…
  2. Preserve the initial gestalt before dismantling it.
An intuition may contain relationships that have not yet become propositions. Don’t accept it as truth—but don’t destroy it prematurely by demanding immediate proof of every component. This is where your “glimmerings” belong: integration may occur before its conceptual reconstruction. SD – From Agency to Process Exc… The human–AI method later made this explicit: gestalt → unpack → test → expand → recompress. CS_Planetary_Predictament
  3. Excavate backward from the developed phenomenon.
Ask what conditions, relationships, stages, and prior forms made it possible. Do this with concepts, institutions, behaviors, mental faculties, and historical events. But—and this correction is crucial—genealogy is not reduction. Discovering that morality has roots in survival does not mean morality is survival. Discovering causal antecedents of deliberation does not mean deliberation is unreal. Origins explain possibility; they do not exhaust the developed phenomenon.
  4. Continuously distinguish the encountered world from our means of describing it.
This may be the strongest epistemological safeguard we developed. “Thing,” “part,” “whole,” “system,” “pattern,” “cause,” “time,” “self,” even “process” are conceptual instruments. Their usefulness does not demonstrate that reality itself is divided according to those categories. The later formulation became especially disciplined: we cannot legitimately assume that the differentiations through which organisms encounter reality are differentiations belonging independently to reality itself. CS_Reality, Distinction, Causat…
  5. Treat language as indispensable compression—and permanent danger.
Language enormously expands cognition, but it also freezes processes into nouns, imports agency through grammar, inherits meanings from earlier contexts, and tempts us to mistake familiar expression for understanding. SD_AI, Language, and the Multip… Your note today sharpens this considerably: words do not contain meanings; contexts generate meanings through the histories and associations brought to them. That makes apparent agreement epistemically unreliable.
  6. Test by expansion and opposition, then deliberately recompress.
Follow connections widely enough to discover what the original framing excluded. Bring in contrary evidence, scholarship, alternative explanations, exceptions, historical evidence, and other disciplines. But don’t remain expanded indefinitely. Contract until the explanation becomes usable again. The boundary is justified by the question, not because reality itself has conveniently stopped there. CS_Planetary_Predictament
  7. Apply before claiming completion.
A framework that endlessly explains why it isn’t finished becomes sterile. Take the provisional understanding into politics, education, AI, institutions, consciousness, morality, history—wherever the question leads. Application tests whether the compression actually works. If it fails, return to excavation. If it survives, retain it provisionally.
